In Brisbane's hot, subtropical climate, mulch is not a luxury but a necessity for a healthy, low-maintenance garden.
Moisture Retention
Reduces water evaporation by up to 70%. Critical during Brisbane hot summers where soil can dry out within days without protection.
Weed Suppression
A 75-100mm layer blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds, dramatically reducing weed growth in garden beds.
Temperature Regulation
Insulates soil from Brisbane extreme summer heat and winter cold, keeping root zones at optimal temperatures for plant growth.
Soil Improvement
As organic mulch breaks down, it adds nutrients and organic matter to Brisbane often poor clay soils, improving structure over time.
Erosion Prevention
Protects soil from heavy subtropical downpours that can wash away topsoil, especially on Brisbane sloped properties.
Aesthetic Appeal
A fresh layer of mulch instantly tidies garden beds and provides a clean, uniform backdrop that makes plants stand out.

Getting the mulch depth right is important. Too thin and it will not suppress weeds or retain moisture effectively. Too thick and it can prevent water from reaching plant roots and create conditions for collar rot.
75-100mm is the recommended depth for most Brisbane garden beds. This provides effective weed suppression and moisture retention while still allowing water and air to reach the soil.
Calculating volume:To work out how much mulch you need, multiply the area in square metres by the depth in metres. For example, a 20m² garden bed at 75mm depth needs 20 x 0.075 = 1.5 cubic metres of mulch.
Key rule: Always keep mulch at least 50mm away from plant stems and tree trunks. Mulch piled against stems traps moisture and creates ideal conditions for fungal diseases and collar rot.
